Penguins use oil from their preen gland to coat their feathers and make them more waterproof and insulated in the icy waters. While molting, the old feathers are all tuft up and falling out, and they are not able to preen the new feathers underneath. So they do not go in the water during this time, which can last up to three weeks. Between chick rearing and molting, penguins get lots of fasting in.
