There is nothing quite like coming out of a deep sleep completely startled. I have a friend I use to wake up by hovering over and staring at his face as he was just starting to come to. I guess there is something immediately frightening about having someone standing over you crazy-eyed looking at you when you are just regaining consciousness. He would jump out of bed with fear in his eyes and arms swinging. Heh, sorry Chucky if you’re out there somewhere.

I can’t think of a specific time I myself was startled out of sleep, other than on airplanes. For some reason I drift off into a deep sleep and then violently wake up for no apparent reason, with drool running down my face, and it always seems like everyone is staring at me and I’m quite sure I must have been saying some questionable stuff in my sleep.

lol thats hillarious (xcuse my spelling i still have that darn cold stupid scientists wasting time on cures for uncureable disease like SARS when they ccant even cure the commom cold) i would like to know how Oubourne can sleep standing up though. cant penguins lie down n sleep. oe can they only lie on their bellies? oh and Congratulations to Wally for finding a Paper Bag in that Frozen Waste Land of his

I’d assume penguins have to sleep standing up to conserve heat. If they lay down their body heat would seep away into the snow.

I’ve got another question.. Because day and night both take exrtremely long.. How do penguins (and other artic animals) know when to sleep and when to wake up?
Compliments for the strips too.. I’ve read them all and watch the RSS-feed daily! I never missed one. Keep up the good work and tell Wally I said hi!

    Gr from Holland,
    Martijn!

I remember my brother letting me brush his hair with a yellow plastic comb while we were on a road trip, he fell asleep because it was so relaxing and was even drooling a bit. While he slept I just kept on combing…after some time he came too and was all freaked out cuz I was still combing away. His scalp was beet red and he had a really bad headache…oops sorry Bro : )

One afternoon I decided to take a nap once my classes were finished. I put my headphones onto my “Mellow-ish Comfort Songs” playlist and settled down for some z’s. Well, apparently I accidentally put Pink Floyd’s “Time (ambient remix)” on that particular list. So about 10 minutes into my nap I was completely hurled out of sleep by the overlapping crescendo of multiple alarm clocks going off right in my ears. Now I have a minor panic attack any time I hear that song.

On another note, I also like to hover over my friends when they start waking up. I have only narrowly avoided a number of frantic wakeup-fists, though.

Most animals do not use day/night light signals to determine when to sleep. Look at cats and dogs! Those who live with us often get in the habit of sleeping when we do, but that’s not their natural manner of sleep. Although, if you ask my cats, any time of day is a great time to sleep! And sleeping in the bright sunshine is even better.

I’ve finally caught up on reading on the rocks. It definitely is hilarity at it’s best. Very clever use of Antarctica, Penguins, and Polar Bears that are Bipolar! Lols. Clever indeed. I’ll keep reading, and I see you update every day cept Saturdays and Sundays, so I’ll definitely be by 5 days a week. 😉 Keep up the good work.

Hey Kirsten, I too have been rudely awakened by Pink Floyd’s “Time”. That was back when my older brother had a stereo in his room and I had the “B” speakers in my room. One day I asked him to make sure I was up by such and such a time…. well you get the picture!

  13. I was going to do that to my sister once. But I couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of it. She woke up and I had to make a run for it before I could do anything.

I would look at you weird if I heard that 🙂
