: Something Fantastical
May 25, 2006

NOTE: I’ll be out of town for the extended weekend. Next comic should be up Tuesday, everyone have a great and safe holiday weekend (or regular weekend even).

And here we go, we begin book two (okay, maybe as far as the site goes it’s just another day, another comic, but little things like that make it feel special and add to the motivation, and I put extra love into this one).

What a way to introduce another of Antarctica’s creatures into the comic… having it fall right out of the sky, I’m not sure where it came from, but it was quite fantastical in the strange sense of the word.

The fish is known as an Antarctic cod (though it’s not even in the cod family). They are the largest fish in the Antarctic waters reaching up to six feet in length, they kind of take the roll of sharks in that they feed on about anything including the floating remains of creatures such as penguins that have been previously killed by another predator. Like other fish that hide just under the ice they produce an antifreeze protein, also quite fascinating, their heart only beats once every six seconds.

Orca often hunt Antarctic cod, that’s what often brings them spyhopping through the ice channels towards the mainland.

Favorite Strips Feedback

I want to thank everyone for leaving comments during the intermission about what have been their favorite strips, storylines and gags. I’ll make notes and keep stuff in mind as I write into the future. I’ll try to take a minute here to respond.

Max-storyline

Yeah, Max became an instantly loved character even with no lines. I’ll be planning for him to make a visit to his old surrogate parents.

Wally in Lederhosen

Heh, I still get a kick out of looking back and seeing him dressed like that. I’m not sure when the opportunity will come again for him to wear it, but I’ll definately continue to put him in entertaining outfits.

the “molting” series had me rolling

I believe I actually cut it off short to finish it up in a week or to have it done in time for the Polar Bear Day strip. I have two or three other molting strips written so Osbourne will definately be molting again, I mean, he is suppose to do it yearly and all.

the Orange Juice ones

Yeah, I think that was like the first theme or little storyline and it became like an instant classic. Not sure if it’s just because it was first, but I think it could circle around to it again, the craving could set in. It was just fun and simple and worth revisiting.

cowboy series

I definately see the cowboy theme repeating, even just to come back for a strip here and there. Also like the molting series, I had a few cowboy comics that didn’t make the cut or weren’t totally ironed out as far as writing. So watch for those hats to come out again. The frozen west needs heroes too.

water ballons

Heh, that was the first “instant classic” strip. I hope it doesn’t become like the hit song I come to hate, unlike a musician I don’t have to play the same song over though. I don’t know what it is about certain recurring gags, the first water balloon comic was just so simple and funny, I don’t think it could be reproduces, so I wonder if the following water balloon comics were as good, or just live off the strength of the first. Not sure, but I already have a couple more written anyway. 😉

B.A.S.E JUMPING

I’m not sure if Osbourne and Wally will ever be in the position to go parachuting again. I don’t have plans for putting them back in that scenario, but you never know what might happen, the comic has continued to contain much falling.

i love the bipolar one

Glad you were able to put humor to a difficult situation. I think I try to avoid touching to many topics that might be uncomfortable, but if I can do it in a light-hearted way then it’s on.

Polar Bear Day one that one was pretty awesome.

I’m pretty sure Polar Bear Day will continue to be Wally and Osbourne’s own special holiday.

Okay, getting pretty long, I’ll cut it off here and respond more next update. You can continue to leave your feedback on your favorites in the comments if you haven’t already.

another day, but a whole new series, I feel vary special to be around here at this time, fantastical, if you will.

Speaking of the word fantastical, I seem to use that word a lot, weird.

And I can’t tell you the name of my favorite comic, well, I can, but it would take a long time, because I love all of them. 😀

  4. Toddy Boy-o says:

Fantastical is a Dane Cook word. Or, you just stumbled upon it, like most of us have. Your comic is genius.

    Todd

    Fantastical!!
Hey that really is fun to say. 😀
I can’t believe that Wally is so oblivious to things that happen to his friend.
I have finally decided on my favorite comic out of the
incredibly long list I said a few days ago:
    “Do Not Feed” Backfire!!! 😯
    That is my absolute favorite!!!
I love all the other ones too though.
That is just one of the best in my opinion.
And Fish Fallen Out of Water.
That’s one of the best too.
I’m not sure which of the two is my absolute favorite actually…..

Hey Tyler – REALLY like the one-panel, detailed hand-drawn thing you’ve had going recently. VERY cool stuff! Keep up the great work!

  8. Lil says:

LOL This strip is fantastical…… I love how Wally is oblivious to what’s happened to poor Osbourne… he’s totally caught up in his own little world, as usual.
I have my days when I can relate to that…

  9. Edi says:

Tyler – I’d LOVE to have a poster of the fish gasping for my dorm room…Consider it? Thats a amazing panel.

NOTE: I’ll be out of town for the extended weekend. Next comic should be up Tuesday, everyone have a great and safe holiday weekend (or regular weekend even).

  11. RW says:

Thanks for the heads up, Tyler. At least we know that there won’t be a comic ’til Tuesday, so we don’t go bonkers with no comic and no idiea when we’ll have a new one.

Well anyway, have a good extended weekend. 😀

  12. RW says:

Hey, I made some “fan art” like stuff, it’s just a spherical version of the first comic, here it is.

  15. Tyler Martin says:

Thanks for the fan arts! The spherical one is definitely intersting, OtR in the third dimension. And the baby Wally and Osbourne is super cute Bethany.

If you would like for me to put them on the new fan art page I’ll be putting together then e-mail me the name you want to be credited with, thanks!

  16. Edward=)=) says:
